LexisNexis has spent the past five years on a treasure hunt, acquiring some of the most innovative legal tech start-ups. My refrain in every post about these acquisitions has been – when and how will LexisNexis start integrating the key features of these products into their existing product lines. Today LexisNexis is announcing important enhancements to Lexis Practice Advisor leveraging their acquisition of Intelligize in September 2016. Additional enhancement to Lexis Practice Advisor include a new and more intuitive home page, enhanced navigation and post navigation filtering. The new Home page enables lawyers to begin their navigation by jurisdiction or topic.

The new interface enables users to navigate content by practice area, content type or jurisdiction. In addition, content is organized along a task-based hierarchical tree, which allows users to either browse a comprehensive collection of practice area content or quickly drill down to find more nuanced, specific results.

LPA currently includes guidance such as practice notes, annotated forms, clauses and checklists across multiple practice areas, including: Capital Markets & Corporate Governance; Commercial Transactions; Corporate and M&A; Intellectual Property & Technology; Labor & Employment; Real Estate; and Finance.  The editorial team is developing eight new practice modules. The LPA content  is created by more than 650 expert practitioners from over 265 law firms and organizations.

Transactional Search Powered by Intelligize

Intelligize  includes over 15,000 M&A transactions, 15,000 registered offerings, 8,000 exempt filings and international prospectuses not found in EDGAR, and all EDGAR-filed exhibits since 1994. Transactional Search Powered by Intelligize will deliver results based on Intelligize analytics which  integrates “how to guidance” with “market samples,” filings and clauses.  Search and navigation tools include embedded videos and a list of “common searches” enabling lawyers to leverage other peoples “know how.”

How Current?-  One of the most important editorial features in any product is the notation regarding updating. LPA includes a “reviewed on” date which signals the currency of the content.

What Do I think they Should do Next?

  1. Integrate with Word so lawyers can more easily draft and edit while using LPA.
  2. Integrate with Lex Machina and Ravel Law  (other recent LexisNexis acquisitions. Wouldn’t it be interesting to also know which types of contracts have been the subject of litigation and the “moneyball” outcomes related to specific documents and clauses in specific jurisdictions?
  3. Try to identify the law firm which drafted the SEC exhibits. While SEC filings can be located by law firm. The exhibits are a goldmine of additional know-how and model documents for a vast spectrum of documents such as commercial leases and executive compensation documents.  Law firms still struggle with internal knowledge management had offering the ability to filter a larger set of documents by law firm would be a welcome enhancement.

Here is the Press Release:

LexisNexis Announces Updates to Lexis Practice Advisor That Redefine the Way Users Experience Practical Guidance

Interface optimized for ease of use and infused with expert-crafted content and tools, including Transactions Search powered by Intelligize, a comprehensive and versatile precedent search tool for transactional attorneys

NEW YORK, September 19, 2017LexisNexis® Legal & Professional today announced several updates to Lexis Practice Advisor® designed to deliver an enhanced, intuitive experience for users and provide easier and faster access to the information they need as they begin work on a new matter. The newly redesigned Lexis Practice Advisor includes a more streamlined interface with additional navigation options designed to improve attorney workflow and output. In addition, Transactions Search powered by Intelligize® is now available for many practice areas within Lexis Practice Advisor. This new feature offers insights on current market practice and allows users to pin-point relevant deals, with access to a comprehensive collection of agreements, SEC filings, and other deal-related documents.

“At LexisNexis, we put customer needs at the heart of our product development and roadmap. For the new Lexis Practice Advisor interface, we worked closely with our users, product experts and leading authors to enhance the depth of available practice area content and introduce new ways to navigate it,” said Sean Fitzpatrick, managing director of the North American Research Solutions business at LexisNexis Legal & Professional. “Our goal in the redesign of Lexis Practice Advisor is to create a product that is as intuitive and user-friendly as possible, while providing attorneys with the high-value, easy-to-digest practical guidance they need to quickly and efficiently begin work on any new matter.”

The new intuitive interface enables users to navigate content by practice area, content type or jurisdiction. New jurisdictional navigation tools allow users to find results faster and avoid repetitive scrolling through lengthy state listings. In addition, content is organized along a task-based hierarchical tree, which allows users to either browse a comprehensive collection of practice area content or quickly drill down to find more nuanced, specific results.

Users can also access a deeper and growing collection of practical guidance such as practice notes, annotated forms, clauses and checklists across multiple practice areas, including: Capital Markets & Corporate Governance; Commercial Transactions; Corporate and M&A; Intellectual Property & Technology; Labor & Employment; Real Estate; and Finance—with additional practice-specific modules to be added. This broad collection of practical guidance is infused with content created by more than 650 expert practitioners from over 265 law firms and organizations, ensuring the guidance provided is expansive, relevant and current.

Using technology and content gained from the acquisition of Intelligize in September 2016, the new Transactions Search powered by Intelligize feature grants users of select modules access to over 15,000 M&A transactions, 15,000 registered offerings, 8,000 exempt filings and international prospectuses not found in EDGAR, and all EDGAR-filed exhibits since 1994. More than two-thirds of AmLaw 200 law firms already use Intelligize.

Transactions Search fits nicely into the transactional attorney’s workflow, providing them with improved precedent-searching capabilities that enable them to understand what is the market norm for their specific practice,” said Rachel Travers, vice president, Lexis Practice Advisor and Analytical Content. “The additional documents from EDGAR and other sources make this feature extremely relevant and useful for transactional lawyers, who can now use Lexis Practice Advisor to search a large body of deal documents and related SEC filings to enhance the transactional work they do for their clients.”

Depending upon which practice-specific modules are licensed by the user, Transactions Search offers links to up to four Intelligize applications—Mergers & Acquisitions, Registered Offerings, Exempt Offerings, and Agreements & Other Exhibits. The first three apps will be available in the Capital Markets & Corporate Governance, Corporate and M&A, and Finance modules. In addition, these three modules plus the Employee Benefits & Executive Compensation, Intellectual Property & Technology, Labor & Employment, and Real Estate modules will have access to Agreements & Other Exhibits—each pre-installed with removable, practice-specific filtering capabilities.

In order to ensure seamless workflow, Lexis Practice Advisor is integrated with multiple LexisNexis products and services. Attorneys can access Lexis Practice Advisor from Lexis Advance®, easily source practical guidance via Lexis Practice Advisor from the Lexis® for Microsoft Office® toolbar, and simultaneously search LexisNexis content and their firm’s internal documents with Lexis® Search Advantage.
