This week Wolters Kluwer Legal & Regulatory  announced the appointment of Atul Dubey as Senior Vice President and General Manager of Wolters Kluwer Legal & Regulatory U.S.., effective April 1.

Atul succeeds Dean Sonderegger, who was named Senior Vice President and General Manager, Wolters Kluwer Tax & Accounting Canada and Research & Learning U.S. Maria Montenegro succeeds Atul Dubey as Wolters Kluwer’s Senior Vice President, Strategy & Innovation.

Atul joined Wolters Kluwer in 2016 as Chief Strategy Officer, working closely with the Executive Board in leading the development of the company’s strategies to successfully drive growth and transformation with a focus on expert solutions. I wrote my first post about Voxgov in 2017 I described it as “ as Goldmine of Hidden US Government Insights and Trends.”  Voxgov is one of those products that I wish I had thought up myself. Founder, Robert Dessau an Australian lawyer working in New York recognized  that US government documents are gold mine of valuable research and data, but  it was not always easy to locate.  The Voxgov database monitors the websites and issuances of over 9,000 federal government offices. The database now includes 75 million documents. Approximately 7 million new documents are ingested and processed each year. All of these documents are tagged using Natural Language Processing  ((NLP) to enable researchers to figure out what has the government said on any topic at any time.

The new interface is more user friendly and intuitive.  There is  a new “highly user-focused taxonomy,.” The directory has expanded from covering technology to including service offerings for  the people who support technology implementation and adoption. Bill Carter had a lot to celebrate during Legalweek 2022. After a two year pandemic hiatus Legalweek, the ALM sponsored international legal technology conference went live in New York. On March 9th Carter took to the stage to announce the rebrand on ALM Media to ALM Global LLC. The name change to ALM Global highlights the company’s  evolution from a US focused media company to a global platform covering international legal news and business.

LexisNexis Legal & Professional®,  is releasing a new API Developer Portal which will enables law firms and legal departments to integrate Lexis proprietary legal content,  news,  dockets, business data, and analytics from a variety LN products into firm portals, dashboards and workflows.  Business intelligence has been one of the hottest areas of law firm investment and innovation. For years I have criticized Lexis for accumulating a offering a federation of wonderful products sitting in separate platforms. At least 5 year’s ago CEO Mike Walsh assured me that they were building a Lexis ecosystem. Today the Standards Advancement for the Legal Industry (SALI) Alliance  announced the official release of Legal Matter Specifications Standard LMSS 2.0. The enhancement expands the taxonomy to almost 10,000 categories or tags which  provide a granular analysis of  legal market services. As firms ramp up their Business Intelligence activities the SALI tags can be a powerful tool for pricing and competitive insights.

Continue Reading SALI Releases LMSS 2.0 A Powertool Driving Legal Market Analysis and Insights

Today  Docket Alarm by Fastcase  is announcing some major new features including pleading/motion grant analytics and visual timelines. These new features are powered by the Judicata ‘s AI technology to enhance Docket Alarm’s native document repository with pleading tags and the  tags from the SALI Open Data Standards. The press release boldly described the new features are marking the “end of it depends.” They are presumably referring to one of the standard waffling responses lawyers are forced to give clients when they are asked to predict the timing and outcomes of motions.

I knew something interesting was bound to come from the Fastcase acquisition of Judicata in 2020. Judicata was a truly visionary platform invented by Itai Gurari and driven by the bold vision of mapping the “legal genome.” Judicata once published a survey “grading” the quality of briefs submitted by leading California law firms. You just gotta’ love geeky lawyers who are always pushing the envelope.

The practical impact is that the upgrades will provide insights on both he likelihood of winning a motion and time to motion grant across all federal courts.

I talked with Damien Riehl, VP, Litigation Workflow and Analytics Content who provided walkthrough of the product.

 The new features allow  lawyers to  can interactively generate  the odds of winning a motion in all federal courts, in a specific court, before specific judge,  or a specific matter. Timelines for motion grant or denial can also be generated for courts and judges for specific matter types. Riehl stated that  feedback from customers indicated “that Docket Alarm’s API is far more powerful than our competitors, permitting Docket Alarm users to create more-complex and more-useful queries.”

Split decisions. One of the features I like most is  seeing how they attack the gnarly problem of split decisions. Where there is a partial grant. The outcome of a motion is signaled by color: grant is green, denial is red and partial is orange..

Enhancing Nature of Suit. It is well known that there are limitations in the federal nature of suit (NOS) codes. DocketAlarm is overcoming these limitations by including the 10,000 SALI data points.  According to Riehl, an API query results in 99% precision. They are still working on optimized  their recall precision. This is in the roadmap for 2022.

Docket Alarm’s timeline distills complex cases into a visualization of the most important litigation events, with integrated search and analytics tools.
